Where I'm From

I am from South Georgia,
"How ya'll doing"?
From Bessie Irene, Willie Clyde,
J. R. and Foy.
I am from gardening, canning,
quilting, and sewing
From scary stories, jokes, and
giggle boxes turning over.

I am from good, down home, cooking
fried steak and gravy,
fresh peas from the garden, creamed corn,
homegrown tomatoes, and biscuits that melt
in your mouth.

I am from nurturers,
protectors, from "No, you can't" and
"Please, be careful", cuddling, rocking, and sweet songs of
Amazing Grace and
Swing Low, Sweet Chariots.
